BULL & HORSEMAN JITALS
These were struck in silver as early as 750 AD with a strong design of a a humped bull lying on the ground, facing left on one side, and a horseman with a spear riding towards the right on the other side. The Shahi kings from Kabul and Gandhara are credited with a long series of these coins to support what must have been flourishing trade from the 8th to 13th centuries A.D.
These coins were liked by the populace, and trade soon carried them far from their place of origin. The design was also adopted by many of the states receiving them in commerce. Their issue began in what is now eastern Afghanistan, first minted by the Shahi kings of Kabul and Gandahara, eventually spreading all the way to India.
