Description

This handmade drinking horn is made the old fashioned way, from a large ram’s horn. An ornate metal “Repousee” style bas-relief “story-band” encircles the bell-mouth.
The story-band starts with an image of a volcano erupting. The middle part shows a bird flying high over mountains.  The last part shows a continuation of the mountain range.  I don’t know whether or not these are general designs, or if they tell a story related to a particular geographic region.
The ram’s horn looks old, and the thought and effort that went into it is huge.  It was definitely not made for resale.  I think it is a quite rare “Real McCoy” mountain man or medieval European horn … but … you be the judge!
There is no signature or date on the horn, but it is clearly one-of-a-kind, and was surely a labor of love for its maker.
The overall length is 13 inches, and the bell-mouth is just under 4 inches in diameter. The leather thong neck-strap is just under 20 inches long.
Oh yes, and by the way, this drinking horn is LARGE, and it doesn’t leak. I would say that it is a true gallery piece … almost too valuable for its lucky owner to take to a rendezvous.
