Why order this Silk Road Series Silver KHUSRU II Drachm?
Religious collectors and students of religious history are sure to appreciate this Silver Drachm from the reign of Krusru II. The last great Sasanian King, he was denounced early in his reign and sought refuge in Mesopotamia. Maurice Tiberius, the Byzantine Emperor at the time, helped him to take back the Persian throne. Phocus then killed Maurice Tiberius, and Khusru responded by capturing the bulk of the Byzantine Empire. Khusru II’s forces attacked Constantinople, but they failed. His son then killed him, which started a civil war.
While conquering the Middle East, Khusru stole what was believed to be the True Cross, the one on which Christ was crucified. The Byzantine Emperor Heraclius took it back to Jerusalem shortly after Khusru II’s death.
Historic Khursu II Design
Obverse: On the obverse is a right-facing bust of Khursu II. A vertical crescent sits on his head, and a six-pointed star is above. Inscriptions on this face translate to “Khusru” and “May the Glory increase.”
Reverse: Two attendants flank an “atasdan,” or fire altar, on the reverse. There is a crescent to the left and a star to the right. A triple rim encircling the image has four crescents and stars.
